Climate Policy Advocate
Status: full-time, exempt Reports to: Executive Director Location: Hartford, CT
Description The Connecticut League of Conservation Voters has an immediate opening for a Climate Policy Advocate. This position will play a vital role in developing and designing policy guidance for climate, energy and environmental justice at the state and local level. This position will coordinate with a diverse array of coalition partners to conduct outreach work on targeted policies, and engage CTLCV members to advance legislative priorities grounded in social, racial, and economic justice. The Climate Policy Advocate will track legislation related to clean energy and climate change at the state level; prepare testimony and written materials, attend hearings, committee meetings, and other events; draft briefing papers and policy positions; and perform other tasks as needed. Candidates are expected to uphold our value and commitment to increasing diversity in our movement and organization, integrating justice and equity into the work we do and ensuring an inclusive organizational culture. Responsibilities
Researching and summarizing clean energy, climate change and environmental justice policies to express them clearly and simply to a range of audiences, including written and oral testimony, social media and mass emails
Maintaining and organizing data in CTLCV’s database;
Identifying and tracking legislation related to clean energy and climate change through the state legislative process;
Attending legislative hearings and committee meetings as needed;
Participating in community and coalition meetings on energy, climate policy and environmental justice;
Reporting on grants dealing with energy policy and environmental justice;
Scheduling and conducting trainings and community activities specifically targeting underrepresented populations in environmental learning, activism, and civic engagement;
Coordinating outreach to community stakeholders and organizations to strengthen our network and mission, collaborate on common goals, or support a community’s desire to engage in climate actions, environmental leadership, or civic engagement.
Skills & Qualifications
Experience in CT politics or advocacy. Preference given to applicants with a background working with the Connecticut General Assembly or state agencies;
A genuine passion for protecting our environment;
Superior organizational, communication, and time-management skills;
Familiarity with clean energy policies;
General understanding of complex issues and obstacles facing marginalized groups, including disproportionate impacts of pollution, policies, and activities.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively while meeting deadlines and managing multiple priorities in a results-oriented environment;
Ability to tap into a diverse environmental stakeholder network;
Possesses the desire and ability to integrate a social justice focus by collaborating with colleagues and partners that are reflective of all dimensions of diversity, such as age, gender, race and ethnicity;
Knowledge of social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter);
Proficiency or ability to learn Google Drive and design software like Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, and Weebly;
Ability to make decisions in accordance with CTLCV’s values and expectations when provided direction and criteria to do so.
Communications Coordinator
Full-time Reports to: Executive Director Location: Hartford, CT
Description The Connecticut League of Conservation Voters has an immediate opening for a Communications Coordinator. The Communications Coordinator will be responsible for answering media inquiries, managing social media platforms, editing content, and analyzing performance of communications tactics to amplify an efficient and impactful program. Additionally, the Communications Coordinator will be critical to the production of our annual Environmental Scorecard, will design content for CTLCV and CTLCVEF’s websites, and assist the Executive Director in managing outward facing communications for CTLCV. Candidates are expected to uphold our value and commitment to increasing diversity in our movement and organization, integrating justice and equity into the work we do and ensuring an inclusive organizational culture.
Responsibilities
Cultivating relationships with the press, including reporters and media outlets staffed by and/or for people of color;
Designing and implementing a strategic communications plan;
Preparing press releases, op-eds, letters to the editor, and other content for print and digital media;
Acting as organization’s spokesperson at public and media events, including interviews for print, radio, television, and digital outlets;
Working with staff and partner organizations to produce briefing papers on key environmental bills or issues;
Designing handouts, flyers, booklets, and other communications pieces as required;
Maintaining and updating the organization’s websites and social media accounts;
Writing and scheduling member outreach emails to keep organization’s followers informed on the latest developments at the Capitol and across the state;
Working with the Executive Director on lawmaker outreach, including scheduled emails, vote alerts, and other timely communications.
Regularly applying a racial justice and equity lens to drafting all of CTLCV materials
Coordinating outreach and publicity of CTLCV events like fundraisers and our annual summit
Skills & Qualifications
At least 1 year of communications experience, preferably in a nonprofit or political setting;
Familiarity with CT and regional press, including print, television, radio, and digital outlets;
Experience acting as a spokesperson in public settings and in front of the media;
Experience working with a Board of Directors;
Exceptionally thorough written and verbal communication skills;
Proficiency with Adobe Creative suite, Weebly, Canva or other web design platforms;
Familiarity with EveryAction, Google Drive
Attention to detail and excellent organization skills;
A working knowledge of Connecticut’s political landscape and/or experience working on a political campaign;
Exceptional written and verbal communication and proofreading skills;
Proficiency in using an array of social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn;
Ability to analyze and efficiently summarize information and data to express thoughts clearly and simply;
Ability to make decisions in accordance with CTLCV’s values and expectations when provided direction and criteria to do so.
Ability to prioritize and effectively manage tasks in a dynamic work environment;
Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines;
